5 Signs of a Hidden Plumbing Leak
A leak does not always announce itself with a puddle. In a coastal home, especially one that sits empty between visits, a small plumbing problem can go unnoticed. These five warning signs are worth checking.
What to look for
- A water bill that climbs unexpectedly. Compare usage with similar months and account for guests, irrigation, or a recently filled pool. An unexplained increase may point to water escaping somewhere.
- Damp cabinets, stains, or lifting finishes. Check below sinks and around toilets and appliances. A musty smell or moisture is a reason to investigate, although plumbing is not the only possible cause.
- A toilet that refills on its own. Water can leak from the tank into the bowl without reaching the floor. The sound of the fill valve cycling when nobody has flushed is a useful clue.
- Water movement when everything is off. Read your water meter, then check it again after two hours with no water use. Make sure irrigation, ice makers, and other automatic equipment are not drawing water. A change can indicate a leak.
- A new pressure change or persistent wet patch. A sudden drop in pressure or an unusually damp area around a supply line deserves a closer look. Utility work, irrigation, and drainage can cause similar symptoms, so diagnosis matters.
What should you do next?
Take photos and note when the problem occurs. If water is actively escaping, close the affected fixture’s shutoff only if it is safe and accessible. For a larger leak, use your home’s main shutoff if you know how and can reach it safely. Keep clear of wet electrical equipment.
